Even though your video may be played back in a small player on your website, smartphone or tablet, the fact is, most support full screen, high-definition playback. 1. High-Definition and Standard Definition – What’s the difference?
High-Definition (HD) video contains a higher number of pixels, which creates a larger, sharper image and therefore, a higher quality. The two most common sizes of high-definition video are 720 and 1080. Meaning, in the dimensions of high-definition video there are either 1280×720 or 1920×1080 pixels–small blocks that make up an entire frame.
Standard Definition (SD) video contains a lower number of pixels, which creates a lower quality image. In a standard definition video, the common sizes are either 640×480 or 720×480 pixels. A 4:3 aspect ratio uses 640×480 and a 16:9 aspect ratio uses 720×480.
2. 4:3 and 16:9 – What’s the difference?
The aspect ratio refers to the image’s shape. Older, box TVs and monitors had a square shape, whereas now, they are more rectangular, or widescreen. Often you will see black bars on the sides or top and bottom of the screen, and that is because the image dimensions of the video do not match the image dimensions of the screen.
